This device at Smith’s Tavern is an apple parer or peeler that is stamped “Made Only By The Reading Hardware Co. Reading PA USA” and “78”. It is a turntable type parer that was attached to a work surface via its screw clamp. The cast-iron device has two primary parts: the main drive wheel designed to place gears within gears thereby increasing stability and adding protection and a locking mechanism that prevents the device from being rotated in the incorrect direction.
