Gas Lighter for Chandeliers

This item at Smith’s Tavern is a long wooden stick with decorative designs with a metal tube and aperture at the end.  It is presumed that the metal tube store fuel with a wick of some sort that would be ignited so as to light candles in a hanging chandelier or other sconces.
