Historic Tools of North Castle

Stove or Fireplace Lighter

This tool at Smith’s Tavern is supposedly a lighter for stoves and/or fireplaces.  It consists of a metal tube the base of which slides up the tube for an unknown reason.  Inside the tube is a removable stick with a wooden handle, a wire stem with a potato-shaped pod at the end.

How this tool was used as a lighter is unknown.  Maybe it was used for something completely different.  Our research has also been unable to discover anything about this item.  If anyone knows anything about this tool, please email the Historical Society with this much-needed information.
