There are three pairs of tin candle wall sconces at Smith’s Tavern: one small-sized pair (T165A&B) and two pairs of taller-sized sconces (T93-96).
Sconces were an essential part of early American lighting. Wall sconces would often be used to flank a mirror or artwork and were always near the hearth. The pair of candle wall sconces at Smith’s Tavern, while similar in design to manufactured Ashbury tin sconces, but appear to have been handmade and have a very primitive appearance. The candles would fit in a tin sleeve that sits on a small shelf to catch the melting wax.
