Historic Tools of North Castle

Wooden Shuttle

This tool at Smith’s Tavern is a shuttle, which was a tool designed to neatly and compactly store a holder that carries the thread of the weft yarn while weaving with a loom.  Shuttles are thrown or passed back and forth through the shed, between the yarn threads of the warp in order to weave in the weft.

The shuttle at Smith’s Tavern is a primitive device, most likely handmade.  The bobbin of thread would have been in the center opening, but the screw/nail holes indicate that there might have been a permanent piece installed in that opening.
