Automobile Transfer Oil Can (c 1920)

This item at Smith’s Tavern is an automobile transfer oil can, circa 1920.

Such cans were used at gas stations or at homes to transfer oil from a larger vessel (like a 50-gallon oil drum) for use in cars or other vehicles/equipment needing oil.  During the early 20th Century, oil companies had yet to market individual oil cans for retail sale.  So the consumers would transfer oil in cans similar to that at Smith’s Tavern.
