Auger Bit Brace

This tool at Smith’s Tavern is a brace for interchangeable auger bits.  While originally designed with a single permanently fixed bit at its end, these types of braces had sophisticated chucks to accommodate replacement bits as well as bits of different sizes and for various purposes.  This tool at Smith’s Tavern has two wingnut screws on opposite sides that acted as its chucks.
