Large Bunghole Auger

This tool at Smith’s Tavern is another form of auger that was specifically used to make bung holes in barrels or casks.  Like the other augers, it has a screw point (or grimlet) to anchor the tool into the wood prior to beginning the boring.  The trough-like structure of the tool most likely was designed to facilitate the release of the liquids in the barrel or cask.

A bung hole is a hole bored in a liquid-tight barrel to remove its contents.  The hole would then be capped with a bung or a spigot.
