Warming Oven

A warming oven was used to warm cold plates and serving dishes before serving a meal.  Cooked or partially cooked foods were kept warm while other parts of the meal or entrée was being prepared.

The warming oven at Smith’s Tavern appears to have been placed against a fireplace or wood-burning stove with the open side against that heat source.  The front of the oven has a hinged door that allowed access to the plates.

There are no manufacturers markings on the oven.
