This item at Smith’s Tavern is a patent model (i.e. a miniature version) of the actual machine. The inventor was Michael Huiet of Miamisburg, Ohio, patent # 51,590 dated December 19, 1865. The machine consists of two slotted beaters so journaled as to beat and compress the clothing on each side against a fixed and central slotted beater. One side of the machine is a truncated cylindrical sector and being ribbed longitudinally on its floor and sides, with ribbed lids and the open-barred beater and carrying in its upper part a pair of wringing rollers.
