There are two different sized unmounted cast iron meat grinders at Smith’s Tavern:
Location: | Panel 10 |
---|---|
Length: | 32 cm |
Width: | 12 cm |
Height: | 14 cm |
Weight: | 1116 g |
The first device (T146) has “Challenge No. 2 Miles’ Patent 1862 1864” stamped into a rectangular plate on the top. The device would be permanently mounted by its four legs. The device was operated by an “S” shaped shaft with a wooden handle. Turning this handle/shaft would rotate a large shovel-shaped blade, which, in turn, rotated a seven-blade chamber (a wingnut holds the lid closed covering this chamber). Meat would be loaded into the large opening near the handle, with the grounded meat disbursed through the circular opening at the end of the device (opposite the crank handle).

The second device (T147) is a smaller but heavier cast iron meat grinder with “Patented March (illegible) 1852” on the exterior top of the chamber. The device would be permanently mounted by its four legs. The device was operated by a short shaft and wooden handle. Turning this shaft/handle would rotate the two cutting blades inside the chamber (a clasp holds the lid closed covering this chamber). Meat would be loaded into the opening near the handle, with the grounded meat being pressed out the spout opening at the other end of the device.
