This item at Smith’s Tavern is a type of whale oil lamp supposedly used by pastors. It is made of pewter with a pedestal base supporting a large reservoir off of which there is a long spout. The top has a hinged lid; there was a long metal rod attached to the reservoir so the lamp could be hung or attached to a wall (broken off and missing from this item). A long wick would extend down the spout into the fuel. This lamp was a stationary source of light.
