This item at Smith’s Tavern is a cast iron stand that would hold three sad irons.
Cast iron stands were used to heat up the sad irons that homemakers of the 19th Century used on wash day to iron their family’s clothing. It was placed the stand on a kitchen stove or pot belly stove and leaned the irons against the sides to absorb the heat from the fire box.
