Cast Iron Trivet

This device at Smith’s Tavern is a cool sad iron trivet manufactured by the Enterprise Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia, PA some time in the mid- to late-1800s.  The trivet is 6-1/8″ long by 4-3/8″ wide at its widest, and it is 1-1/4″ tall. It sits flat on three stubby feet. It has an “E” scroll in the center and it is marked “ENTERPRISE M’F’G. CO. PHILA U.S.A”.  [See T236 Tabletop Coffee Grinder for more information on Enterprise Manufacturing.]

Cast iron trivets are sturdy and reliable. Cast iron is often seasoned in polymerized oils and fats. The seasoning creates a stick-resistant coating and prevents rust.
